What are the factors affecting the effectiveness of laser welding?

1. Power

The thickness of the material determines the need to use how powerful laser welding machine, in the process of laser welding, the output power is too large or too small will have a certain effect on the melting effect.

In welding the light power not only affects the quality of the weld, but also affects the mechanical properties of our welding process, therefore, in the commissioning process, it is recommended to prioritize the confirmation of the effective power range, in order to better adjust the reference.

2.Focal length

Focal length refers to the welding of the material surface from the focused laser beam minimum spot distance, because the laser focus is the center of the spot, the power density is too high, easy to evaporate into a hole, away from the laser focus, the power density distribution is relatively uniform. Therefore, in the welding process, we need to change the distance from the focal point to the surface of the material (this distance is also known as the amount of out-of-focus), in order to get better welding results, the size of the amount of out-of-focus can change the power density and spot, the quality of welding has a certain impact.

The amount of defocus can be divided into positive defocus and negative defocus. The use of positive defocus, the melt depth decreases, the melt width increases slightly, the weld spatter decreases; when the use of negative defocus, the melt depth increases, the melt width increases slightly, the weld spatter decreases; and when the amount of defocus F = 0 (positive focal length), the laser power density increases, the welding will produce spatter. In practice, thin plate welding, melting depth is small, suitable for positive defocus; melting depth is larger, the negative defocus (if the focus is too far away, the effect will not be obvious, the energy is more easily dispersed).

3. Swing width

The width of the weld directly affects the performance of the weld and produces a certain change in the depth-to-width ratio. At a constant speed and swing frequency, when the width is reduced, the weld width and material surface heat area is reduced, the depth of fusion increases, and the welding performance is stable. When the width increases, the weld width and material surface heat area increases, the energy distribution is not concentrated, the depth of fusion decreases. For thick materials, the better the depth to width ratio, the better the weld performance.

4. Frequency

Frequency mainly affects the appearance and shape of the weld and the quality of the weld. In the case of constant speed, the laser frequency decreases, the overlap rate of the welding point decreases, and the surface of the weld is relatively rough; the laser frequency is too large, and it is also easy to appear slag or penetration problems. In the welding process, according to the processing materials and welding requirements, you can choose the appropriate welding frequency to ensure a certain overlap rate, the weld seam will also be more smooth and clean.

5. Speed

In terms of speed, high-speed welding will make the depth of fusion shallow, generally in the welding of thin plate or better performance of the material, it is recommended to use high-speed welding, and vice versa. Welding process, the speed will also affect the weld aesthetics, low-speed welding is prone to collapse, high-speed welding will cause uneven welds.
