Portable Fiber Laser Welding Machine

Exploring the Laser Processing of Brass

Dec 18, 2023

Brass, primarily composed of copper and zinc, exhibits strong ductility, wear resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, and finds applications in various industries such as industrial, jewelry, home decor, and high-tech applications. Common brass products include valves, water pipes, gaskets, lamps, circuit boards, precision timepieces, plaques, necklaces, commemorative coins, bookmarks, and musical instruments.

Both copper and brass are highly reflective metals, with low absorption rates for common wavelengths. However, brass readily absorbs laser energy at a wavelength of 1.06 micrometers, making laser processing highly effective compared to traditional methods. Laser marking machines, laser cutting machines, and laser welding machines are well-suited for working with brass materials.

1.Laser Marking on Brass

Utilizing a fiber laser marking machine on brass allows for the creation of corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant, and fade-resistant permanent markings. Fiber laser marking machines can engrave text, images, and serial numbers on brass surfaces, producing clear and realistic results. This is often employed in customizing timepieces, jewelry, bookmarks, and other items.

The advent of 3D laser marking machines has brought finer and more aesthetically pleasing results to deep engraving on metal products. Using a fiber 3D laser marking machine layer by layer removes brass material, creating highly detailed and three-dimensional brass products such as commemorative plaques.

2.Laser Cutting on Brass

Employing a fiber laser cutting machine or laser marking machine, the laser beam can rapidly melt the surface of reflective materials, interact with molten metal, and accurately cut various complex patterns and shapes. Laser cutting machines offer high precision, smooth edges, and minimal deformation. Compared to traditional processing methods, fiber laser cutting machines can cut various thicknesses of metal, including brass, aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and galvanized steel, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

Laser cutting can be used to create unique artistic decorations, including brass jewelry necklaces, brass gaskets, and decorative screens.

3.Laser Welding on Brass

Traditional welding methods like electric welding, TIG welding, and gas welding encounter difficulties in welding brass due to melting challenges and poor fusion between filler material and base material. Laser welding machines effectively overcome these challenges. The powerful laser beam melts and welds two brass pieces together, creating brass products with excellent wear resistance, stability, and artistic appeal. Brass, with its good conductivity, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance, is often used to manufacture accessories, mechanical instruments, and household items like brass cabinet pulls, brass lamps, brass cookware, brass signage, and brass kettles.

Brass materials, with their physical attributes such as wear resistance, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity, combined with the tactile and artistic qualities achieved through laser processing, offer significant advantages in the market.

Due to the reflective nature of brass, operators are advised to wear safety goggles when engraving brass and follow operational instructions and tutorials to ensure personal safety. For more information on laser equipment, feel free to leave a message to contact us.
